Doc Scratch Application Post
Character Name: Doc Scratch
Character Series: Homestuck
Character Age: Unknown; said to be millions of years/sweeps old.
Character Canon Point: End of Act 5; Originally from after his conversation with Rose on LOHAC (Land Of Heat And Clockwork)
BACKGROUND:
Before going into Doc Scratch’s history, it would be more appropriate to go into the history of Alternia first. Alternia, the alien planet in another galaxy, was once a peaceful planet. The dominant species, known as trolls, lived rather peacefully in this paradise planet. Violence was little to none and class division did not exist, despite some trolls being born with different blood than others for instance. There was no wars, or strife, or conflict on a large scale and trollkind was peaceful. Everyone was happy and generally well to do.
Then, one day, the end of the universe came. Trolls across Alternia were dying and the planet itself was collapsing. In order to save their race, twelve trolls of varying blood color began playing a mysterious game called Sgrub. If they were to win they would be led to the ultimate reward of a new paradise to live on. However, a game with such high rewards came with many high risks and a lot of difficulty. Never knowing violence or fighting, the trolls were not prepared for the rigors presented by the game and could not even defeat even the simplest of game constructs. There was simply no way to win and they quickly came to facts with this. From there, it should have ended with their defeat and the extinction of the trolls. But, for them, giving up was not an option.
They consulted with a denizen existing within the game called Echidna, the Mother of all Monsters, and she gave them a choice. The twelve could put into motion a failsafe mechanism called The Scratch, which would hard reset their entire universe. This mechanism would not turn back the clock, but recreate the entire universe from square one. Someday this reset universe will come to the same crisis their universe had come to, but this time the twelve heroes would be ready to face the game and be led to the ultimate reward. However, there was a catch: the twelve trolls would be reset as well. Their memories and entire lives would be wiped from existence and they would live as Ancestors to another group of twelve trolls, which would be related to them biologically in every aspect. They would not have the chance to save the universe, but their descendants would.
The twelve agreed and, using Echidna’s quills, the ectobiologist scratched their session and their universe.
But, with the twenty-four trolls (the 12 pre-scratched and their 12 replacements) came a 25th being into existence. As Echidna said, the new universe would prepare the new players for the rigors of the game they would play. But, in order to uphold this part of her bargain, big changes would need to be made to Alternia. So a 25th being was brought into the new universe at its very beginning, before life had even developed on Alternia, to oversee the planet and create advance preparations for the twelve players that would fight to save the universe. A First Guardian, who went by the name Doc Scratch, created through paradox space and ectobiology, was sent back to the beginning of Alternia’s creation in order to prepare the twelve for their scratched session. And things were going to be quite different. It was around that time that, through his granted omniscience, he came to understand everything that would happen from the moment of his birth to the moment of his death. More important to him than the preparations, it came clear that he would be the catalyst to summon a time traveling demon of overwhelming power into the universe upon its destruction.
Of course, the demon was already here.
Thus began Doc Scratch’s existence in the new reboot universe. It is never gone into large detail what he exactly did, but it has been laid out that he has influenced culture to a large degree on Alternia alongside the demon Lord English. Among these things he:
If there was only one large hitch in his plan, it would be the role of the Signless. Signless, Karkat Vantas’ Ancestor, was slowly remembering the original peaceful universe that he once lived, despite all trace supposedly being wiped away. Doc Scratch hypothesized that it was due to his mutant candy red blood, which was an anomaly for trolls and considered to be a mutant deviation (as the lowest blood color should be a rusty dark red). Signless, inspired by the powerful lucid dreams he had of a peaceful Alternia, spread the word of love and equality through Alternia and empowered others to fight against the monarchy. While Doc Scratch never truly spoke of it, he was naturally unnerved by the Signless and grew to hate the troll. Not for the message he spread, but simply because he remembered things that no one should remembered and almost ruined the accumulation of all his work.
…Well, almost. Signless naturally caught the attention and ire of the high bloods and they chained him in hot irons and put his dying body on display for all possible mutineers to see the results of fighting them. The Condesce, the sea dwelling empress of the trolls, forbid any writings of the Signless and worked to wipe him from history. Naturally followers kept his word, though in hushed tones. All was right again and even the resulting deviations in the timeline, due to the teachings of the Signless, still worked in the First Guardian’s favor in the end.
Needless to say, Doc Scratch played a pivotal background role in the events of Homestuck through his methods and dealings. One of his first appearances in the comic was the highlighting of his involvement with the FLARP feud between Team Scourge and Team Charge. To use bullet points again to explain:
All that was left after the trolls inevitably created the human universe, only to be attacked by Jack Noir of the Sburb session, was to set up the conditions of his death. Again, what exactly he did was never explicitly showed, but it involved convincing Rose Lalonde to use a massive bomb called The Tumor to destroy a shining Green Sun, which was the power source of all First Guardians. With the destruction of the Green Sun, Doc Scratch would die and Jack Noir would lose much of his power through the prototyping of Earth’s First Guardian Becquerel. He also met with Spades Slick, who had already killed fourteen of the fifteen necessary sacrifices for Lord English’s summoning, and “convinced him” (read: beat the shit out of him) to kill Snowman.
However, Doc Scratch never claimed to be an honest man. Truthful when it came to facts, but not completely honest about the malicious intent behind them. As the plan to destroy the Green Sun is set into motion, it becomes clear that when The Tumor goes off after the death of Snowman and Bilious Slick (both killed by a different version of Jack Noir) it does not destroy the Green Sun, but creates the sun itself. While Scratch said The Tumor had the power to destroy the sun, he himself never said it would. At the end of the Critical Moment, just short of his death, he sends a message to Gamzee Makara (who may or may not have been manipulated by Scratch in some way to go crazy) and relays this short conversation:
TC: oh yeah?
TC: AND JUST WHAT THE MOTHERFUCK IS IT
TC: that we motherfuckin are?
TC: :o?
Before Act 6 begins, an Intermission shows the summoning of Lord English and consequently the death of Doc Scratch. It turns out that while the 15 members of the Felt were sacrifices for the summoning, Doc Scratch was the host body which Lord English grew out of. Through the biological codes that Doc Scratch was made from (t1ck, t0ck, 8r8k, H34DS, honk HONK) going in order, Lord English finally arrived for the first time and travelled back in time to commit his heinous acts of evil.

Trollkind had never known the corrupting influence in their evolution which led them to perpetual war and violence. That is to say, they had never known me. |
Thus began Doc Scratch’s existence in the new reboot universe. It is never gone into large detail what he exactly did, but it has been laid out that he has influenced culture to a large degree on Alternia alongside the demon Lord English. Among these things he:
• Helped to start the cult religion of the Subjugglators, as one of the two mirthful messiahs (Lord English being the second), which prophesized of a Vast Honk that would come at the end of the universe. This is the religion that Gamzee Makara later follows and believes himself to be the messiah of.
• Created class warfare and blood bigotry through various means, such as using the Ancestor of Aradia Megido, The Handmaid, to travel to different points in time and put into motion such things as the blood hierarchy. This caused much of the race to become as violent as they are, through the suppression of the rust bloods, which were ruled by the purple blooded land trolls and the royal purple sea dwellers that controlled them. Handmaid would later go on to fight the Troll Empress, Imperious Condescension, and die as a result. The Condesce would then be recruited as Handmaid’s replacement and go on to work for Lord English herself.
• Took on protégés who would unwittingly, or sometimes against their will, work to further his goals. One protégé, for instance, was the gamblignant pirate Marquise Spinnert Mindfang (Vriska’s Ancestor), who stole from him an oracle cueball that answered any question posed to it truthfully. Another is arguably Kanaya Maryam, though it is likely that his visits with her were part of preparations for her role as the Sylph of Space.
• Laid out the conditions for the first summoning of Lord English in the future, thus creating a stable time loop, by recruiting 15 members for a gang called The Felt. One of these members in particular was the Black Queen of the troll’s Sgrub session, who came to hold the beating heart of the troll’s universe inside her, after she was exiled from her own kingdom.
• "Gifted" the troll race the horrorterror lusus Gl'bgolyb, which could send out a psychic wave of sound energy that could annihilate all trolls in the known universe. The only ones who could survive this wave would be Her Imperious Condescension and her possibly successors, which share the tyrian blood. Condesce went on to use the monster, who doubled as her lusus, to have a tight hold over Alternia and threaten their extinction at any moment she desired.

One of his first appearances in the comic was the highlighting of his involvement with the FLARP feud between Team Scourge and Team Charge. To use bullet points again to explain:
• He convinced Vriska to make Tavros jump off a cliff, while somehow distracting Aradia and Terezi, which caused him to become crippled.
• As a result of this, Aradia sent the ghosts of the trolls Vriska fed to her spidermom to haunt her. He then convinced Vriska again to kill Aradia, by controlling Sollux’s mind to blast her, though she was apparently already going to do this even without his intervention.
• Due to this, Terezi sought justice against Vriska. Terezi told Doc Scratch that Vriska had an oracle cueball that helped her cheat. In a moment of uncharacteristic behavior, Doc Scratch flipped the fuck out and blew up the cueball in Vriska’s face, causing her to lose an arm and an eye.
• Vriska, realizing Terezi was the cause of Scratch’s flipout, mind controlled Tavros into mind controlling Terezi’s dragon mom. The dragon mom awoke Terezi on Prospit and had the troll open her eyes to see the blistering Alternia sun, effectively blinding her.
• After dying, Aradia became a ghost herself and led Sollux into starting up Sgrub. It is at one point seen that Aradia and Doc Scratch were in contact, speaking about how Jack Noir of Sburb entered the troll universe.
• For that matter, the FLARP players are the ones responsible for the majority of Doc Scratch's genetic code. Tavros provided t1ck, Aradia provided t0ck, Vriska provided 8r8k and Terezi provided H34DS. The last codes, honk HONK, were provided by Gamzee in an offshoot timeline, where he ultimately killed all the remaining trolls after becoming sober too early on in the session.
